And sometimes, because we have so much time to spend with someone, we have a tendency to forget to take the time to ask if they want to talk about something and see what they’re thinking. Don’t ever force someone to talk if they don’t want to. You can’t guess their thoughts and feelings. You can’t guess what they need and what they want. If someone says they want to leave, don’t try to talk them out of it. Don’t beg them or tell them that it’ll be ok or you’ll help them or anything like that. Let them leave. When they’re finally at the door, offer a hug and a good-bye, but don’t force them to stay. When you know someone’s really struggling with something, you can know that they want to leave, but you can’t force them to stay. They have the right to leave. I know that this sounds like I’m saying that they shouldn’t want to leave, but that’s not what I’m saying at all. If someone wants to leave, they want to leave. And that’s ok.
